Health in Detention and Ethics of Care


We are pleased to announce the launch of our one-week training program called "Health in Detention and Ethics of Care", organized by the University of Montpellier in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and GERTOX. This course is specifically designed for healthcare professionals employed within the prison environment, offering a global and interdisciplinary outlook.



Course Objectives

Participants will gain skills to:

  • Identify key legal instruments, applicable standards, and professional codes to protect the rights of prisoners, detainees, and healthcare professionals.

  • Evaluate the most significant health issues in detention facilities.

  • Analyze and address health and human rights problems faced by detainee populations.

Course Topics

The training covers a range of important topics, including:

  • Global challenges in detention facilities.

  • The legal framework of ICRC detention activities.

  • Health and well-being of detained populations, including specific needs of women, minors, and the elderly.

  • Health systems and administrative structures in detention.

  • Combatting communicable (TB, HIV/AIDS, scabies) and non-communicable diseases (mental health, substance abuse).

  • Nutrition, water, and sanitation in detention.

  • Medical ethics, medical confidentiality, and dual loyalty for healthcare providers.

  • Management of hunger strikes.

  • The health impact of solitary confinement and disciplinary segregation.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for:

  • Healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists).

  • Administrative staff of health systems.

  • Social scientists, health system researchers, educators.

  • Personnel of international organizations dealing with police stations, detention centers, penitentiary services.

  • Authorities involved in detainee health.

Teaching Methods

The course follows adult learning principles and employs a wide range of teaching methods. Experienced instructors will share their knowledge and expertise with participants. The course is coordinated and organized jointly by the University of Montpellier and the ICRC.

Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the training, participants will undergo a multiple-choice questionnaire to assess their knowledge and performance. Certificates of attendance will be issued to all participants, and certificates of achievement will be awarded to those who score 60% or higher in the final assessment.

Prerequisites

  • At least two years of professional experience in the relevant fields.

  • Proficiency in French.

  • Limited to 25 participants, selection based on applications submitted before September 30, 2024.

Fees

  • Tuition fees: €1200, payable six weeks before the start of the course.

  • Non-refundable registration fee.

  • Additional €300 charge for cancellations made less than three weeks before the course starts.

Location

The training will take place at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Montpellier, from November 25 to 30, 2024, in Montpellier, France.
